Pet Insurance

I have lifetime insurance with Admiral that they claim renews every year, that we have had for our dog since we brought him home. He had an accident and now needs surgery on his back legs, after looking to review our policy to make sure we are covered, our policy was canceled in October without any communication to us via email, letter or phone call. This surgery is going to cost us over 6k and we dont know what to do as our new policy with them wont kick in time for us to make a claim.

Has anyone else had this happen, we cant understand why its been randomly canceled without any communication to us.

    So you pay annually?
Was it cancelled mid term or are you saying it didn’t renew?
  • No we pay monthly, so it should just be rolling, it just didn't renew

Have you spoken to Admiral as to why it didnt renew?

Have you checked your renewal notice to ensure it said it would auto-renew?
  • We are about to chat to them but wanted to get all our ducks in a row before hand and just see if anyone else had accounterd this, as being an insurance company I worry they will just come up with something to get out of it, and yes it does say it and it renewed for two years beforehand automatically.

Did you not notice the payments stopped almost a year ago?
  • No because we pay for multiple policies with them, such as home insurance, car insurance ect so it all comes out the same time, so didnt think anything of it when the amount changed slightly.

I've seen it happen many times, though not with Admiral explicitly.

If it's an error on the insurers part they will most likely reinstate the policy as if it had renewed when it should have and your only pain will be catching up on the payments.

If it was intentional and your renewal letter actually said you had to contact them else it will lapse then that will be seen more of your mistake for not reading the letter properly. Its something that happens periodically and there are plenty of examples of the ombudsman opining on such matters like https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/decision/DRN-4845405.pdf  but the devils in the detail, in the linked case the insurer did send a letter after the renewal invite stating the policy had lapsed, but it was a Motor policy so more material an issue than pet... the woman ended up with a conviction for driving without insurance.
