Hi all,

Is it possible for my mum to have a family member care for her and for that family member to receive carer's allowance, whilst she also has some non-residential care come in on certain days? E.g. carer's visit twice a day for 4 days a week, whilst family member lives in for the other 3 and provides care for those days?

Many thanks.

Perfectly possible. Depending on the number of caring hours, your family member  actually  does on a regular basis.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Presumably the family member is doing the minimum 35 hours a week caring in those 3 days (perfectly possible with 3 x 12 hours) and is also abiding by the other rules to receive CA (income, other employment).

In the dozen or so years my OH was carer for his parents there was never any check on the actual hours he did and as he was earning in any other way there was no reason for the CA to be stopped at any point.

Hello.. Yes this is possible and is the situation I am in.

I have PA's who support me at home (council funded) and also my husband claims carers allowance for everything extra he does as 'carer' not husband.  The important bit is to make sure that eligibility criteria fit e.g income threshold and hours of support.

Some care hours can even overlap so someone receiving a significant care package can still have unmet support needs which are filled by someone else who is eligible for Carers allowance.
