Not unless your policy says so.  But note that the cover you get under your policy might change whilst the building work is being undertaken and your policy might need to be reviewed afterwords (eg. if increasing the number of bathrooms, increasing the value of your house....)

    I'd definitely check.

We recently had an extension built and the cost was in excess of what our insurance would cover. I can't remember the figures but, at today's building prices, the insured figure was very low. Also they're interested in security of the property as we were effectively having part of the back wall of the house removed.

We ended up with specialist insurance for the duration of the build and then went back to 'normal' insurers.

    What insurance?
    What building works?

Making some big assumptions... most home insurance requires you to inform them before undertaking material works to the insured property though how they define material works varies notably. If it's just re plastering and decorating then most likely you'll tell them and they say to get on with it. If it's changing anything structural then they are more likely to take issue. Some will allow cover to continue for an additional premium and/or some changes in cover (mainly EoW and theft) and some will say the works are too much for their tastes so will require you to cancel the policy before the works begin.
