Solicitor has not started on purchase for 2 months

2 months ago I signed the required documents (in person) and paid for the searches as soon as my solicitor had received the contract pack from the vendor's solicitors. Since then I have heard nothing at all from my solicitor. I haven't contacted them as I know they do not respond well to being 'hassled', and it is holiday time so I thought I would leave it til end of August. The agent chased last week and my solicitor said they would be reviewing the contract pack at some point in the next 2 weeks. That's 8-10 weeks after they received it. Since that is the first step in the process I cannot see how they have done any work at all for 8 weeks. They won't even let me see the documentation in the meantime. Fortunately there is no chain (I'm paying cash for an empty freehold house) but I think the vendor is now getting a bit impatient. The last time I bought an empty property the whole transaction only took 12 weeks, and that was leasehold with a mortgage.

I have already paid the solicitor 1k (immediately on billing) for an aborted purchase earlier this year so they know I am a reliable client.

Is it worth/justified making a complaint, or would that just make them go even more slowly?

I think maybe you're being too patient. I'm darned sure I wouldn't have waited 8 weeks when we were in very similar circumstances to your purchase.
