Deepest Darkest Devon Debt Decisions

  • All veg tonight from the allotment, so nice to be self sufficient in veg for a few months, pity I can't do it for fruit as well, as in bananas etc. Bit more on the side hustle today, but think some of that will have to go towards the next food shop.

  • It is so hard to kick the debt, why oh why did I let myself so deep into it. I realise it isn't so bad now but is still driving me absolutely mad. I want to save money not put it towards debt.

We grow quite a bit of fruit & veg but have never tried growing melons. Other curcubits seem to do ok here so you've inspired me maybe to try them.

No, not in the south.....more sort of murky north east midlands, but I do have a greenhouse.

  • Your allotment sounds amazing! I’ve never tried growing melons. Have managed cucumbers this year and courgettes but will have to consider melons!!
Agree with Cherryfudge that growing and eating your own produce is great for health. What a fabulous idea to save and sell seed.

Definitely worth a go, especially if you have a polytunnel or greenhouse. We have eaten one!

Always worth keeping your eyes open for apples left in boxes at the roadside which happens here and of course blackberries are free.
Stew and freeze or turn into jam for deserts over ice cream, morning toast.

Even better if you find someone with an apple tree who doesn't want them. If picked carefully Bramley's keep till march so no extra in fuel to preserve.

Veg bottling is a cheap way to do it. Salting also.
Carrots and potatoes can be stored in sand in a tub if kept dry so no fuel cost.

Look at the past before people had freezers for cost free ways to preserve. Books tend to be better than the net for simple detail.

Fruit from the supermarket such as apples, citrus are coated in wax with several preservatives in
Bananas and transported in a gas to stop them ripening.
The worst I found was black olives. Normally red they are put in huge vats of caustic soda.

I'll shut up now before I put you off your food 🙂
    Good luck with your quest.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
