Is this kind of “offer” the norm with other building societies?!
By saying "other building societies" it looks like you think that Kent Reliance is a building society.

It isn't. It is a bank. KRBS stands for Kent Reliance Banking Services.
Kent Reliance was a building society to 2011.
Even today if you type in Kent Reliance Building Society you be taken to a page with Kent Reliance being the first item on that page.
They don't same to highlight KRBS in there heading buried in small print at bottom of page.
Don't operate much like a bank no current accounts
Can't apply directly for mortgage  has to be through a indepent mortgage adviser
Essentially it went bust and was rescued. It's owned by OSB Group plc aka OneSavings Bank (LSE:OSB) and is the stablemate of Charter Savings Bank. I think one or more of its other brands offers mortgages e.g., Precise.

Plenty of banks don't offer current accounts e.g., Atom Bank, RCI Bank.

I don’t remember what happened in 2021 but its original problems stemmed from the Financial Crisis and were the reason for its conversion from a building society into a weird mix of an industrial provident society - a Co-op - and a normal company.
