Talktalk voip

Hi all, I recently upgraded with Talktalk to superfast 150 broadband and VoIP. Maybe I was misinformed but I thought VoIP meant no call charges so I was surprised that my first bill included itemized calls at a cost of £7+
What do people think?
If you are wondering why we don't just use WhatsApp, my wife is a luddite and uses the phone (although not a lot)

All calls are chargeable unless you take a call plan, exactly the same as having an old copper phone line, I've no idea why you would think otherwise.

I'm not sure either! I think it goes back to info I read in the noughties about VoIP.
I'll have to look at a call plan

Some VOIP providers do free VOIP to VOIP calls but they get charged when you phone a landline or a mobile via normal telephony services so inevitably they pass on the bill, normally with a margin.

Whilst some businesses do use WhatsApp as far as I know WhatsApp doesnt have an offering that would work for a 16,000 person series of call centres per one of my previous clients so if needing to deal with companies by phone most dont have an option but to call outside of the WhatsApp infrastructure.

It's a rip off. Same as wi-fi calling is billable by the mobile phone companies even though the data is on your broadband.
