New York City Nails (UK nail bars)

Colour me unimpressed.

I bought my mum and sister each £45 worth of gift vouchers, the ammount it costs to have your nails done at NYCN. I thought that was fine untill the first hickup. I gave my mum her vouchers in a card on christmas and because she knows of my financial situation she said she'd rather I had them done, or get a refund if possible to treat myself to something (DONT snap, I know she meant well). Reluctantly I took them home when I left.

A week later my sister made her appointment to get her nails done at NYCN in Debenhams where their consession is. Five days after her appointment one of the thumb nail extentions splits. Que me not being happy, certainly not the kind of quality I'd expect for the price. Another two days pass and there's a huge chip missing from her ring finger nail. I'm still trying to get sis to go complain and have them sort it out!

Anyway. I called the NYCN consession in Debenhams today to enquie about returning the gift vouchers. The woman I spoke to didnt really sound like she was paying attention, but said she'd have to go ask her manager if the vouchers were returnable. she came back, and as I partly expected, she said no. She kindly pointed out I could give them to a friend for a birthday or sell them to a friend or on ebay. Not the best cutomer service IMHO. So I then asked her what the general returns policy was, again she wandered off and came back but this time said "there is no returns policy". I have to admit, that is the very first time I've ever hears that from any professional storefront, ever.

Anyway. I know that generally things like returning vouchers are at the companies own disgression, but could someone please advise me here? I've checked their website *here - which for their apparant reputation is a bit of a let down* and there is no mention at all of returns policies for the products they sell, nor mention of the gift vouchers......

so I'm up a creek, metaphoricly speaking. Any advice out there?

Thanks for that, I was hoping someone would be able to tell me if their website should contain terms and conditions of sale, like, so folk have a reference of what they're letting themselves get into when making a purchase. Surely there's something not right about a company who does not take any returns at all? No?

The information they put on their website is down to them to decide.
As for helping customers see what they were letting themselves in for, did you check their website before you bought the vouchers?

I have never encountered a retailer who was prepared to refund gift vouchers.

I appreciate that its a frustrating situation, but can't really see what else you could expect them to do.

I've used the nail bar in Debenhams too and found them rubbish. I'm not surprised they wouldn't refund as I've never known any company to offer a refund for gift vouchers. Hope you manage to sell them on, else use them bit by bit for nail painting and shaping. You don't have to use them all in one go.

Vouchers are not like a dress or handbag (but you dont have to give a refund on them in this situation either).Sounds like you have a very sensible mum.Use this site for buying moneysaving presents-you were ripped off IMHO-£45 is extortionate,

If a company doesn't have specific Ts and Cs on their site, it is safe to assume that the statutory rights afforded you by the Sale of Goods Act apply - individual stores' Ts and Cs are generally in addition to your statutory rights, so if they do not publish any, the SOGA is the default status of the relationship.
