The wider internet suggests that you can use an emulator on your laptop to pretend to be a smartphone for this.
Whilst that may be so, is it really likely to be a practical solution for a non smart phone owning "Grandad99" to reliably communicate with his granddaughter?
He's more likely to be 26 than 99

But yes, not a practical solution in any event. You'll either need to bite the bullet and get a smartphone, which will allow you to use the desktop version of WhatsApp (that's exactly how I use it) or persuade your daughter to use Teams or similar.

GTot me lost here but I have WhatsApp on both my ;aptop which never goes out of the house and on my mobile. I did not and do not do QR codes. My Granddaughter has just had a baby and they have set up a WhatsApp account sharing pictures around the family.
Nice and simple for what we want

you do need a smartphone to be able to do this  - I find it very useful being able to have whatsapp on desktop and laptop as much easier than typing on phone

each smartphone whatsapp account be used on 4 other devices so if you used her phone it would mean using her whatsapp account (not a good idea)

And what if the OP inserted his SIM into her smart handset?
I don't think that the Whatsapp requires a sim card.
I have used Whatsapp on a smartphone without sim card and WIFI only.

Couldn't live without having the app on pc as well as phone.
Especially for the likes of videos, where whatsapp does all the optimising into manageable file sizes.

WhatsApp does not require a SIM card.

When you download and set up whatsapp on a smartphone it asks you for your telephone number but that does not have to match the SIM card in your phone - in fact there can be no SIM card in your phone if you want

As part of the installation process WhatsApp will send you a text to the telephone number you enter but that can be on a different phone if you want

Yes but the phone auto reads the number so you need to skip this

I know that WhatsApp Business allows you to register with a landline number but little else about it.

Is it sufficiently similar to be used as a "social" tool or are features missing or paid-for?
