DVD Hard Drive Recorders

I have bought a Panasonic Hard Drive DVD DMR-EX77EB and I mistakenly thought it had twin tuners. How do I set it up so that I can record and watch TV. At present I have a Panasonic TV which is 6 years old and I do have a digital box but don't know how to wire them so as to watch and record. I will soon be buying a new Panasonic TV TX-32LXD700 which has a digital tuner inbuilt, I take it that I will be able to watch and record then? Sorry to be so ignorant.

    Hi,
I've just set up this very same recorder for my OH. Lets assume the recorder is connected to the TV "EXT1" Scart socket via a scart lead. To watch programmes that the recorder is tuned to you would simply select "EXT1" (it may also be called AV1) on the TV (there's probably a button on the TV remote control marked AV which does this).

If you are using the recorder to record a program you can't ask the recorder to display a different program on the TV, as the tuner in the recorder can't be tuned to two different programmes simultaneously.

So all you need to do is to deselect AV on the TV using the remote. Then the picture displayed will be the one that the TV's tuner is tuned to (eg BBC1, ITV etc.).

I've not used a digital box but I would guess they connect to a TV using a SCART lead also. Hopefully your TV has two SCART sockets on the back, probably marked EXT1 and EXT2. So if you want to watch programmes from the Digibox on TV you would select "EXT2" (maybe AV2) via the TV remote control; this assumes the Digibox is connected to the EXT2 socket of course. Incidentally, it doesn't matter which SCART socket each device is connected to, as they're both the same.

If your TV only has one SCART socket then you have two options:

    1. Dump the Digibox. When recording via the recorder accept the fact that you can only watch the standard five tv channels (BBC 1 & 2, ITV1, Channels 4 & 5) on the TV.

    2. Get a SCART lead splitter box from somewhere like Maplins. The SCART leads from Recorder and Digibox then plug into this and not the TV. The SCART lead from the box then plugs into the TV. There's a button on the side of the box which allows you to select which device (recorder or digibox) you want connected to the TV. Even if the recorder isn't connected to the TV it will still record programmes.

    Hope this helps.
