Online Natwest debit card payment declined again BUT not really says Barclays

Options
After over an hour on the phone NatWest said its Barclays declination (yes the receiver) but Barclays say its the NatWest's declination, not only that but they (Barclays) haven't declined even though I've got the red outlined onscreen declination on screen.
I was forced to repay both using the joint account holder's card (wife).
Amazingly enough both payments (one a month old and the other yesterday) now show paid the first time and Barclays say no record of the red outlined declination that I have saved on my screen.
Who is lying and why, I've banked with the NatWest for over 50 years and had Barclays credit for a similar time. Who why what is going on.

Want to actually frame the situation? Were you trying to make a debit card payment to Barclaycard using a Natwest card?

So NatWest say they see the payment request at the date/time you originally made it and that they authorised it? Saying they didnt decline it isnt the same as saying they see the transaction and authorised it.

A screen presented to a user is really a payment failure screen rather than a declinature, there are a variety of reasons why payments fail which can happen before the card issuer is even contacted or can happen intentionally by the card issuer declining the payment and the payee receiving and processing this message appropriately.

Sorry, put I cannot make head or tails of who is paying for what with which method.

    What were you paying for?

What method and from which bank were you making the payment?

What do you mean by being forced to repay using your wife's card.

  • 1) Yes doing my monthly clearance of my Barclay credit card account using my NatWest debit card online which I have been doing successfully for donkeys years no problem.
    2) The last 2 months payments were declined using the usual joint account holders card so I had to pay by the others joint holders card.
I decided to sort the problem out today but unfortunately neither side can agree to admit liability and they can't agree how and who actually paid, neither had text or emailed me/us when the declinations happened, Barclays say they were paid even though they said declined on screen and Natwest are currently saying they are unpaid even though BOTH accounts shown both payments being made and received.
That's as clear as I can be MUCH clearer than either bank.

Given the issue, why not just make a faster payment between the accounts?

Receiver's of card payments do not decline them. Has you card expired? Does it work making other payments? Wonder if it is requiring 2FA to authorise the payment & you are not getting the message, due to a pop up blocker?

Not sure if you are arguing semantics or not?

I've had card payments that haven't gone through and when speaking to the card issuer they have advised that no authorisation request was received and so it must be declined or a failure at the payees end. As you hint at, if you enter an expiry date that has already passed the transaction will most likely not be presented to the card issuer and be rejected by the payees system, in a similar way if you miskey the card number they can see the checksum is wrong and so dont bother trying to process it.

Shat payment were you making to NatWest?

Is it not  the Mastercard  system who declined  the payment before it went anywhere?
