So Link financial now "own" this debt.. But here's the problem, this debt isn't mine!!  as far i can ascertain, Link have minimal information to link me tot this debt. Name and phone number. They have written to me, to a different address! It's linked to a Halifax credit card, but i have no other details. I take it this is not unusual. obviously i want to cooperate, but how do i without essentially giving the debt agency my actual address and other information?

They have been emailed to explain this is not my debt, but are continuing to do so alledging they explained all this in the last letter. that they sent to the wrong address.

    Just block them.
Or ask here on  Debt-free wannabe board how to reply them formally.

You could send them a Prove It letter (google it, use one from a charity like Citizens Advice or a customer site like MSE or Debt Camel) which denies the debt and makes them go away unless they can show it is yours.

If you have not had a Halifax card in the last 6 years it's likely statute barred too (assuming it is yours) if you haven't acknowledged it in the last 6 years

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

There is no reason why you have to co-operate.

It's worth sending one prove-it to each new owner of the debt but not getting into protracted correspondence

The is a prove-it template inthe stickies on debt-free wannabe

Not sure if your replies to me and fatbelly were mixed up but a prove-it letter doesn't need to reveal an address, just send them the letter and if they cannot show you owe the debt then they will normally stop

Sorry - how did you get this if they don't have your address?

I'd suggest sending the prove it letter, giving your current address (they can find it easily enough) and tell them that you won't engage in any phone calls or emails so if they have that to erase it from the account immediately.

Letter format is on the debt free wannabee forum - check the link for the SOA in my signature - that will take you most the way there.

This is my dilemma, they started off by telephone calls, i ignored at first but once identified it is a legit company engaged further. Trouble is, they don't have much. as far as i can tell, they have name DOB possibly,  and a mobile number.

i emailed after this, so they currently have name, phone number and email.
So far they've refused, or have been unable to provide any other data, other than a brief explanation that the account was a defaulted Intrum Halifax credit card opened in 2009!!

i'm not planning on giving them anymore of my data, which they could then sell on, or use to do a credit search.

They can search you, provided they can justify it, using your name and DOB, that will be enough to find you on the credit agencies.

Just email them the letter as Brie and I have suggested
