Savings account set up by my father

Good Afternoon,

I received a savings cash book from my father who I no longer have contact with.
The booklet has his name on it and clearly states “on behalf of” then my name. I went to nationwide to try and access this money but they wouldn’t allow it. They wouldn’t give me any advice on how I can access this account either? Any suggestions?

Even after the child becomes an adult quite often it's only the trustee who can withdraw the money so your father probably needs to do it ("savings account setup by my father").

What's the name of the account? You need to Google its T&Cs.

My wife set up something similar on behalf of each of our kids. My youngest went into a branch with the passbook and was given the same message you received.
Fortunately we're all still on good terms and my wife banks with NW so it was easy enough to resolve.
The accounts appeared in my wife's NW app and she had to transfer the contents from there to the respective children.

  • There is also the possibility that the account balance has been withdrawn by the father even though he was not in possession of the passbook.
All he had to do was tell NW that the book was lost and sign an indemnity.
  • You could try contacting Nationwide’s head office directly or sending them a written request explaining the situation. If your name’s on the account “on behalf of,” they might still need proof your dad’s okay with you accessing it, like a signed letter or legal document.
