Don’t open mail not addressed to you.  Write ‘not known at this address - return to sender’ and put it in the nearest post box.
Or open it if you want (there's no law against doing so if it's addressed to your address), and then return to sender...
If there's a lot of mail shorten it to
     NATA RTS
which will be understood by RM (as advised by my postie).
Not at this address, return to sender

Return to sender is pointless, RM just bin it. They dont return it as its costly. Just bin it.

    Wrong. (Postman for 12 years)
In all the years ive done this, i still get mail for my previous owner. Its not guaranteed that it will make it back to the sender.

This. At my work we (quite reliably as far as I can figure out) receive any such bounced mail.

Of course returning-to-sender isn’t guaranteed to stop such mail. But it’s far more likely to work than simply binning it.

Mail without a return address on the outside goes to a "Returns Unit" where it gets opened. If no return address is found inside, it ends up going to an incinerator if further inquiries fail to determine who posted it.
In all other cases, unopened mail gets returned to the sender free of charge - This is all embodied in the Universal Service obligation that Royal Mail is bound by. Non-compliance comes at a very steep cost (£10.5 million for the last USO breach).

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
