Shared Car

Options
Myself and Wife now share a single car, we both have full NCD, it is currently insured in my wife's name as the main driver which is due next month, should I switch to myself as the main driver in order to maintain my NCD

Only switch to yourself as main driver if you are.

If you aren't insure the vehicle in your name, with your wife as a named and the main driver.  Next year swap the insured party to your wife, with you as a named driver,  this ensures both NCD are maintained.

Apart from the odd insurance company that will honour three years, most will honour NCD for two years.

So you can alternate the policy holder each year and keep both NCD valid.

It’s not the “main driver” who gets the NCD, it is the policy holder, which can be alternated annually as mentioned above.

Do you have plans to go back to two cars? 🤔

As above, you should both be able to maintain your NCD but it won't be necessary longer term if this is a permanent decision.

All very valid points made by previous poster.  Yes, the simplest way is just to alternate the policyholder each year - and, as noted by maman, even that's only really necessary if you intend to go back to 2 cars at some point.
Just be aware that some insurers will increase the premium every so slightly if the policyholder is not the RK.  But in my experience, the difference is tiny, a few quid at most.  And often, where it's a husband/wife scenario (one is the RK, the other is the policyholder), often it won't make any difference at all.
