Someone trying it on ?????

So I got a text message and email this morning from my car insurance stating that someone had made a claim against me for me hitting there car.
They stated the day it suppose to have happened but could not tell me or my insurance company a time or location but said I hit a parked car.
They asked me to fill in a form and submit photos all around my car which I have done, I have no damage to my car whatsoever and even the insurance company are lost as to why there has been no time or location stated by the third party.
I know 1000% I have hit no one and the fact there's little information makes me think someone's just trying it on to get some damage repaid from a previous accident ?.
No one has come to me stating I hit there car at anytime and I have looked over my car with a fine tooth combe and found no scratched, digs or marks anywhere.
This is really worrying me and I know this will keep me up tonight wondering what the hell is going on.
Any feedback really appreciated.
Thank you

First check it is actually your insurer, if it is then fill in the form, send back the photos, follow the process.

It's def my insurer contacting me, spoken to them on the phone twice from number on there website and the text you can see other text before this one so 100% from them.
Just seems odd the third party did not give any time or location and no indication of what damage I have done, just that I hit there car and caused damage and there claiming of me.

It's not particularly odd in my opinion.

Back in my claims days our First Notification of Loss team filled in would take all the details from our insured calling including any details of the third party and their insurers. They would check the MID and see if the insurance details matched what was on there.

As they weren't experts in liability they had some simple options to choose from as a 1 line summary of the incident which also included 2 other options of - "Other" & "Liability Disputed". Assuming they chose something like "third party hit my parked car" and the insurance details matched then the system would automatically send a letter to the third party insurer stating we were holding them liable. The letter would include their vehicle registration, policy number and date of the incident (think ours did include location but not 100% sure) and then our contact details and claim reference number.

in 90% of cases we got back a similar letter conceding liability and asking us to provide amounts to be reimbursed at the appropriate time.

The remaining 10% were either disputes on liability or disputes that the incident ever happened. The former resulted in the case moving from Recoveries to Disputed Liability or Personal Injury the later was dealt with in Recoveries.

There is a ton of other information that in principle could be added to the FNOL letter but it simply wasnt programmed to do so and most letters we received from third party insurers were very similar to our own. Once you know its not a straight forward case you then start earning your salary but thats why the recovery team had many more cases per handler than we did because most of theirs are straightforward and the most they had to do was determine when all the costs had been settled to generate the automatic letter asking for repayment

Your insurers should be going back to them asking for more details along with any witness or video evidence to support their allegations whilst asking you for anything you can add to dispute the allegations.

Its only that I have been reading horror stories of people just like me who have done nothing wrong but there insurance company still paying out for accident repairs on a third party and then affecting premiums which in all intent is totally unfair given the circumstances.

One simple (and I expect very common) explanation would be someone getting the reg number wrong.

90% of those will be because the person didnt respond to their insurers when they were contacted for their version of events. Had to deal with dozens of policyholders complaining that we'd settled claims against them and pointed out we'd written to them 8 times and called them 10 times but had no reply to either so had to act based on the information we had. Half the time it was responded to by "oh I changed my number and didnt tell you plus I never read my post". What else can we do?

The remaining 10% are ones who went quiet half way through, who say they were there at the time and date but "dont remember hitting anything" yet the TP has provided 2 independent witnesses that said they saw it etc.

There are lots of reasons why these cases happen, some are simple honest mistakes, someone writes down a registration plate 1 character wrong, some its cloned plates, some are that you did hit something and just didnt realise or assumed it was something other than another car (could reference Jasper Carrott here)
