An MOT fail can never be irrelevant.  Get stopped by the police for something else & they will not ignore the MOT fail, they will just add it to the list.
So if a car fails an MOT on a failed bulb, and the bulb has been changed - but no retest has been carried out, and the previous MOT is unexpired - you are saying that the driver can be prosecuted...?

    For what?
    Think about the question...

It has no valid MOT 🤦‍♀️

What would they add to the list?

Reading this thread it is not hard to see why so many drivers mistakenly either believe they have committed an offence or believe that they haven't.

In particular, we have one poster who says categorically that a failed MoT test immediately invalidates one that is still current. There is no justification or basis on which to make this claim. Just a simple bit of thought would see this is nonsense.

Fortunately there are enough people on here who know the law and can put matters right. But in other places there are not, and misinformation simply gets embellished and perpetuated - often "down the pub."..

    Except it does.

The old test has not expired.

The failed test does not invalidate the old one.
    The car is not unroadworthy.

The problem with forums, trying to distinguish between those who clearly know what they are talking about and those that don't !.

Nearly 25% of all cars fail and MOT.

    Indeed.

But so long as the forum remains neutrally moderated, others can call out the wrong posts. This thread is not unique.

It may be a good idea next time you have an MOT if you ask the tester when they put their results onto the online computer.

If the old ticket was expired, then the question of any failed test would be moot.

The confusion many people have is SPECIFICALLY around a failed test but unexpired previous test.

Why? Yes the results of all tests are recorded. What significance do you think that has?

And they are recorded immediately based on my last dozen on so tests.

In fact I don't think in normal circumstances they can complete a test without uploading the results.
