Marriage tax allowance

Options
Hello,

I have recently seperated from my husband and because of this I have applied to cancel our marriage tax allowance.

He was the main income earner so the tax allowance worked in our favour, now that were seperating our finances he is still getting the benefit of that allowance and i am paying more tax.

when i have cancelled it they have said it wont take effect until April next year this seems unfair does anyone know if ive been informed incorrectly?

could be right - the Personal Tax Allowance is for the tax year, so it would make sense.

You could of course ask him for the extra money he gets - probably around £120 for 6 months

I know nothing about marriage allowance but found this online

    After you cancel

If you cancel because of a change of income, the allowance will run until the end of the tax year (5 April).

If your relationship has ended, the change may be backdated to the start of the tax year (6 April).

This might mean you or your partner underpays tax for the year.

It is correct advice, a change to the MA only happens in the following tax year.

The allowance cannot be apportioned. It is all or nothing.

But it look as if it MAY be possible to backdate the change, even though it is usually only activated the following tax year.

The information from @singhini shows that isn't always the case though.

You missed the first bit that you have to be legally separated.

You must cancel Marriage Allowance if any of the following apply:

    • your relationship ends - because you’ve divorced, ended (‘dissolved’) your civil partnership or legally separated
