I am 62, my wife is 56 - When I get a quote for motor insurance, I discovered that they only use MY 12 years NCD for the quote, my wife's 6 years is irrelevant.
Even when my wife is set as the primary driver...
My wife IS the main driver - I struggle to drive nowadays due to arthritis....but since I have the most NCD, and OWN the car - are we doing anything wrong ?
Mind you - motor insurance has never been cheaper for us - around £120 fully comp !

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

1 car, 1 policyholder who earns the NCB.

If your wife is the main driver, she should be the policyholder - then her 6yrs should be taken into account, but not yours. You'll never get 12yrs taken into account, anyway - maximum varies between insurers but is usually 6-9yrs. The difference in discount beyond 3 or 4yrs is pennies anyway.

Named drivers never accrue nor "use" NCD. Only the policyholder.

Insurers vary on if they want the NCD to be from the main driver or the policyholder but certainly it will only be from one person.

Do you only have one car between you? Note an NCD is only valid for 2 years with most insurers so if your Wife's isnt being used on a vehicle it will expire at some point

This is something to give very careful consideration to.

If her NCD is still valid, and you're "barely" driving now due to health concerns, DEFINITELY get the policy changed to her name and get her NCD in use. Because, if you don't, then you may find it expired when you come to need it.

In addition - we are possibly moving to Motability in a few years - so insurance will no longer be something to worry about !

    yes only one car
And the car is in my name - with my wife being the main (almost only) driver

Simplest solution is for your wife to insure the car in her name and use her 12 years NCD. She will have to read the questions and assumptions about who owns the car, who is the registered keeper etc carefully, but most insure will be quite relaxed about her insuring a car owned by a spouse. They can be more fussy when it's more distant relatives.

If you want to keep your own NCD active you can alternate so that she insured it one year and you insure it the next, though it sounds like that might not be a major concern for to much longer.

*6 years NCD. There should be very little difference in premium between her 6 years and your 12 years.

She has 6 years NCD @aretnap not 12, thats the OPs. Certainly with some insurers there will be a difference in premium between 6 and 12 years.
