scam or just random accident?

Options
I'm a bit confused!
Just had a phone call on my mobile from another mobile
The caller said he was returning my call from earlier this morning - I've not called anyone
He gave me his first name, said he was from a particular town (didn't mention a business name)
Repeated my mobile number back to me
Said he's been "getting a lot of these calls" - sounded quite peed off
Made me think about sim swap scams?
Just a coindence, yes?

It could be genuine or it could be a scam.

Your safest option is to ignore the caller. Do not interact in case it is a scam. He will attempt to draw you into providing him with personal and financial details.

If it is genuine then there is nothing you can do to help him so don't bother.

My money is on it being an attempted scam.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

I didn't give any info, not even my name
Only confirmed my mobile number when he said it

They could have noted the number down wrong, particularly if it was a voicemail rather than choosing to simply return a call via a smart phone.

It could be someone has spoofed your number and has called them.

Not much you can do either way and from a single call its probably not worth doing any of the nuclear options.

it could be that a scammer has spoofed your number, had this happen to me last year and got a large number of people returning calls that I hadn't made.  Did die down after a few weeks so I didn't go through the trouble of changing numbers.
Generally found that most people phoning me were from business's, no doubt thinking that it was a genuine enquiry that they'd missed, but good advice above not to give out any personal info.

Block the incoming number and forget about it.  You have no transaction with the guy, so its a scam or a mistake. Either way, waste no more time on this.
