    Update - Thank you for your help. After 5 years I sorted it with your amazing insights.
    Did a bit of testing with the cable testers and that showed no errors on the hidden cables.
    Bit of jiggery with the cables that were plugging in and also re-doing one of the cable heads and I now have full wired speeds into the conservatory and garage!!

    - I do have one of these  - what would you say is the best way to test? -

    Plug the units into each end of the connection to be tested and ensure light 1 to 8 illuminate in sequence. Typical faults are-

    So carp patch leads and/or dodgy intermittent connections!  Glad you got it sorted!

    Was this all an intellectual exercise or was the 100 Mbit/s speed factor limiting your use of the BB connection (4 UHD TV watchers simultaneously perhaps)?

    It wasn't really limiting my use, just wanted to try and get the better speeds elsewhere.
    Plus the garage connnection has a TP-Link deco attatched to it to provide WiFi into the garden. It's now giving better speeds at a distance.
