Retrospective application for Disability Living Allowance (DLA)?

Options
Hi,

Our son was diagnosed with autism six years ago.  Our daughter has just had the same diagnosis, however this time we were advised by the specialist that we should apply for Disability Living Allowance on her behalf.

This was never suggested at the time of our son's diagnosis and I wondered if a retrospective application would be possible for him?  And/or whether the concept of retrospective application even existed.

Thanks

I don't think retrospective applications are ever considered in this situation - generally claims can only start on the date of application / requesting a form. But the other thing to consider is that the diagnosis is not relevant: it is the amount of care / supervision which a child requires compared to a child of a similar age.

It means that for very young children, DLA can be hard to apply for, because children generally require a lot of care and supervision at a young age, and this generally reduces as they grow older.

And autism in two different children may mean very different things: one may continue to require much additional support and supervision compared to others of a similar age, whereas another may not.
