Re to SORN or not, the government website says just report as sold instead if you no longer own it, so I'm leaning towards just doing that if a sale goes through quickly.
SORN it now. There's zero reason not to. It takes seconds.
Obvs, report the keeper change/"in trade" as soon as it's off.1 -
My reason not to SORN, would be in case I couldn't sell via Motorway and ended up having to insure it and drive it, thereby having to re-tax it (after the current tax is cancelled and refunded by SORNing).
Also wondering if SORNing draws attention to the fact that the car has been sitting around a while, which might affect bids.
Both might be miniscule probabilities, but conversely, what's the downside of not SORNing if the car is sold before the supposed fine will be charged?0 -
Reread the thread carefully, it has already been explained why you ought to SORN it.1

The downside is that you're already breaking the law, and you'll get penalised because you forget that discretionary deadline for pausing the penalty.1 -
Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't forget the SORN deadline but have taken the above advice and SORNed the vehicle today. The car is going into the Motorway auction tonight at 7pm. They knocked about £700 off the estimated price due to partial service history and a couple of very small scuffs I highlighted, but I guess that's par for the course. I believe bidding closes at 3:30pm tomorrow, so we'll see where we're at then.0

car was collected and the online valuation was what i received, no waiting on bid from traders0 -

Just seen that Autotrader has a free "Sell to a Dealer" service. I can't find any reviews as to whether it's any good but the initial estimate of the car's value is £2.1k over the Motorway price (before they knocked it down based on the service history and a couple of scuffs).
Has anybody used the Autotrader service or heard anything about it?0
