I can remember visiting the Museum to see Tutankhamums mask in 1972.  You had to queue up to get in, then queue up to walk round then when you finally got to see the mask you weren’t allowed to hover.  It was amazing though, a bit smaller than I was expecting.

Unlike 1972, queues to view the Bayeux Tapestry might well be virtual and the crowds actually at the venue far less.
Brilliant I never thought of that. 😁

Have you been to any of the major exhibitions at BM in recent years?  The exhibitions are generally single file shuffling around each exhibit as there are so many people.  The Stonehenge and Silk Roads exhibitions in particular wre incredibly popular.

Since we left London in 1996 I haven’t been to the BM.  I was at University in London and stayed for 25 years.  I loved visiting the big museums especially the BM and Science Museum.  They were free in those days, I don’t know if they still are.

I haven’t been to any exhibitions about Stonehenge but it is not very far from where we live so we have visited it a few times.  The traffic on the A303 is still as slow as ever as motorists are still slowing down to ogle it😹

I believe the plans to build an underpass were scrapped last, mainly due to cost.

All the public museums and art galleries remain free but their special exhibitions are often charged for unless you are a paying member or patron.

Membership is part of the problem though because for most events members can just turn up, flash their card and get in. Whilst inevitably these places are fairly good at predicting visitor volumes and can adjust the number of paid tickets to balance the predicted number of members it's an art rather than a science and sometimes they get it wrong.

In a recent Tate Modern exhibition they took what was to be a controversial decision that everyone needed tickets for entry, for members it was free but they couldn't just show up on the door. The nature of the exhibition meant visitor numbers had to be kept low and it was typically "sold out" for weeks in advance. Members who've paid close to £100 for their membership were annoyed. Especially overseas members who may only have one visit during the duration of the exhibition and not realise the special terms - membership for them doesnt make economic sense but they are supporting the institution and maybe their visit coincides with a special members only thing.

I can see the BM doing something similar if they think it will be as popular as they are predicting
