Two 'one way' flights or return

Options
We're booking our annual trip to our house in Cyprus.
With the current uncertainties with flight cancellations, air traffic control etc, would we be 'safer' booking a return bundle with one airline rather than tow one-way tickets with different airlines (as we have done many times before)
Don't really want to be stuck in a "your flight's cancelled, sorry" situation.

Not booking you return flight until you need it would seem to be the 'safer' option.  Booking separate flights at the same time with different airlines wouldn't reduce the risk of the return flight being cancelled.

But, having got there, we would like some assurance of getting back!
If we had a return booking with Ryanair (for example) would it be more likely to fulfilled (not that anything is guaranteed with RY!) 😉

If there's a flight cancellation, the airline is obliged to rebook you onto the earliest available alternative, even if with another airline, and this applies whether it's two one-way tickets or a return one, so I can't see this being a factor - airlines won't prioritise those with return tickets over those with one-way if that's what you're thinking.

It is true that if you have a return ticket and the outbound flight is cancelled, then if you wish to cancel the whole trip then you can have both flights refunded, but is that a scenario you'd countenance or would you just want to get out there on the next flight?

This may not be practical - as with many countries, you may be asked to show onward or return travel at border control before being allowed into the country.
