Having plates made for a car when private plate is put in retention

Hi. First time posting, with a specific question on the process of transferring a private number plate that I can’t find answered already.
I’m about to put my current car’s private plate on retention, ready for it to be assigned to a new car that I take delivery of in around a month. My understanding is that using the DVLA web site to put the plate on retention de-assigns it from my current car immediately. However, I don’t have “old” plates for this car, so would need to have them made up for whatever registration gets assigned to it.
However, if I need to wait for the new V5 to come through to give to a plate maker, does that basically mean I can’t drive that car until the new V5 comes through? Or is there some other form of evidence I can get hold of immediately that a plate maker would accept?
I’ve seen mention on the DVLA web site about an e-confirmation that can be used for the private plate, but nothing about how you deal with having plates made for the reg that replaces the private reg.

Many thanks in advance for any guidance anyone can provide.

New to you, or actually a new car?0

When you stick your plate on retention you'll get an eV948 certificate emailed to you as a PDF that is valid for three working days to get plates made up.0

In answer to the query on the current car the plate is on: if done online between 7am-7pm it will immediately be assigned an age-related plate for that car (if the car is registered at an England/Wales/Scotland address; if its registered in Northern Ireland it will be assigned a NI format plate) and you will also be emailed an eV948 form (in PDF format) which you can print out and use in lieu of the V5C to prove your entitlement to the new plate.
If the car previously had a non-cherished plate, normally (but not guaranteed) this is held back and never reassigned to another vehicle, so it can be reassigned to the original car it was on.0 -
Are you taking delivery from a Dealer or AN Other. If a dealer why can you not get the plates from them?0

But once the plates are put on retention they have nothing to do with the new car.0
