is there any guidance on what I need to do for my return car journey trip to UK?

You shouldn't need to do anything, you will have arrived and had your passport stamped as usual, there are no specific formalities on the way out, your passport will be stamped again to show your departure

And just remember that the date in October is the start of the rollout. There will be a transition period for people like you, who are 'in between'. And I'd expect that there will always be an option for those who have entered with a stamp to leave via the same method.
