To connect to wi fi it needs to be left open to network. It is more usual to keep kindles on aeroplane mode as that’s the default as it saves a lot of battery. I’ve never routinely left mine on anything other than aeroplane mode .
What do you mean exactly 'left open to network'?
Like do you mean it needs to be powered on for 5mins, 10mins, 1hr?

Mine is (was) not in aeroplane mode. It is now though. I never even knew that was a thing until this thread.

    As for what I did....

Powered it up at home, went forward about 5 pages to see if they'd load, backwards 5 pages & then turned off.

It will have had the ability to connect to the WiFi during that time. Whether it did or not I'm not sure.
As I have my home network password stored in my kindle as soon as I turn off aeroplane mode it would connect and start removing the book from my kindle. If yours is now in aeroplane mode you can safely see if you can still open the book, or if it had already started to remove itself.

I also have my home network password stored in my kindle (I guess, as I don't have to enter it to download stuff).

I only turned on aeroplane mode at work ... after I'd turned it on at home.

I was able to read a few pages on my break at work just fine but what you said - "started to remove" concerns me. I thought it was just the book is there or it's not but what you said makes it sound like I could have 99 pages of 100 there but the final 100th page may not be there kind of thing.

Suppose I'll find out in due time. When I'm getting to the cliffhanger no doubt.

For anyone who may have read them I'm on the Sam Pope series by Robert Enright and for those who haven't read them but have seen Reacher on Amazon Prime - it's kind of English Reacher in a way.

Oh & in case you think I was being difficult as I was being kind of vague about the WiFi & connections etc - I'm not all that fluent in the way of the Kindle, that's all it was. I know how to download stuff & read stuff, that's about it :)

It's OK, the final page is replicated below:

...and the lady finally got her man.  They were both loved by all of each other's friends and families and their lives grew so wonderfully entwined.  There was the biggest, grandest Wedding ever with his Daughter being her Maid of Honour and her son as his Best Man.  They all lived happily ever after.

    The End.

I suspect the "started to remove" means they started to remove one book at a time, not just a few pages of each book.
