Can I install windows on a new machine using a SATA dvd drive or do I need to fit an IDE drive for the install.TIA D.

I think that it will depend on the capabilities of the motherboard and, specifically, how the BIOS initialises the hardware.
However, I've successfully installed both Windows and Linux on an Asus motherboard via a SATA CD/DVD drive with no problem at all.0 -

You will see if the bios can see your sata drive when you start up, if it's not there change the settings from ide to sata, as long as the bios can see it the new install will see it too.There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't...0
