I told people to pay money into the account of Mr R EssexExile because that's what it says on my cheque book and statements, then they get told it's wrong and it's in the name of Mr Robert EssexExile. So I wouldn't fuss about it.
The easiest thing is to put the actual formal first name in full.  If all they were checking was the initial it would still give a match.

What happens seems to be something of a lottery, a friend of mine was paying me some money into my First Direct account from her Nationwide account.  She put my name as "Firstname Surname" and it was rejected, I suggested she try "F Surname" as that's the way it appears in my online banking and card.  She did that and it said it was a close match an offered to correct it to "FIRSTNAME SURNAME" which was almost exactly what she typed first time!
