The easiest thing is to put the actual formal first name in full. What happens seems to be something of a lottery, a friend of mine was paying me some money into my First Direct account from her Nationwide account. She put my name as "Firstname Surname" and it was rejected, I suggested she try "F Surname" as that's the way it appears in my online banking and card. She did that and it said it was a close match an offered to correct it to "FIRSTNAME SURNAME" which was almost exactly what she typed first time!1
