Ebay 90 day limit for refunds - Currys Clearance

In January i bought a tumble dryer and washing machine from Currys Clearance on ebay. Both items were 'refurbished' and fully tested etc and had a year warranty.
Anyway, the dryer didn't work from day 1 and was promptly sent back for a full refund.
The washing machine carried on OK until last week when it packed up. Currys arranged collection, took it, acknowledged they had received it and said I was due a refund.
However, then then said it's longer than 90 days since I bought it, therefore they can't refund it - something to do with ebay payments - and I have to raise a claim through whoever I paid with (in this case a credit card). When I talked to the credit card company they said they wouldn't raise a section 75 as the payment was to ebay rather than direct to Currys. They said they could try a chargeback, but I have to wait 14 days until I can raise one.
How on earth can Currys get away with that?. Surely the Sales of Goods act says they need to actively issue a refund, not just wait for a claim to be raised against them?.
It may well be an ebay payments issue that has the 90 day limit, but surely a company like Currys should have some kind of system to account for that - and not just direct everyone back through their payment provider. It's pretty disgraceful behaviour making the customer do all the leg work to claim their rightful refund for a dodgy product Currys sold to them.

Sales of Goods Act hasn't covered consumers for a decade, it only applies to certain B2B purchases.
For all things consumer it was replaced with the Consumer Rights Act, this is more specific and states a refund should go back to the method of payment used. I dont use Ebay Payments (or whatever they call it) and so can't say how long after you can refund a payment but it could be true that the matter is frustrated by the fact the tool isnt setup to allow refunds after a period of time.
Why are they saying they have to wait 14 days? Chargebacks are limited to 120 days so rather than having to wait longer it seems you are likely out of time for that method0 -
What I'm getting is that Currys want to refund you and are saying there is a problem with the system or method? In which case, can you not simply say it is their prerogative to make the refund by whatever means?Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise.
