Did you agree to go ahead with the work after the second invoice with the hand-written "VAT to be added". Did you query that?

(a hand-written amendment to an invoice is not in itself in any way illegal)

Hi thanks for all your comments, met the guy tonight he was very polite and tried to appease me but stuck to my guns. Got the best outcome so very happy.
