Looking at this TV, can it work without an HDMI lead from the Virgin box?

Define work? Certainly will have apps that will provide content. If you want to use the Virgin TV box, then a HDMI connection will be required.

    What type of Virgin box?

If you mean a router, you can connect via WiFi and run the apps installed on the TV.

If it's a TV box (Tivo/360/Stream etc), no, you need cable.

Thanks for the replies, it looks as if we will have to have an HDMI cable.  Was hoping not to as we want to move the TV across the room.
