For people who are keeping Windows 10 after Oct 2025, here's a complete and easy to follow video guide on using the free options to get another year's support. The creator shows you don't need to continue being locked to using a Microsoft account after registering.

Setting up Windows 10 Extended Security Updates

Linux Parsley is also available, of course.

To save people time, the video mostly just says there’s going to be a windows update shortly that will enable you to opt into the free security updates. That’s it, for 99% of people who just log into Microsoft accounts.

It also shows how to minimise the settings data you share with Microsoft, but I wonder how many people really care about this.  Personally I’m not bothered, and perhaps I’m just projecting my opinion onto others?

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

The official blurb has always been "a Microsoft account to do anything" in Windows - and that's just not the case..  The backwards compatibility requirement sort of dictates otherwise, and Pro providers corporate solutions as well that also don't need MS accounts in this way (though in a lot of cases the corporate solution is powered by Microsoft in some capacity so a lot of work accounts are technically Microsoft accounts through the back door)

Anyway who's to say they won't change the requirements between now and October considering the Window 11 share is (apparently) creeping up to the point where it's 50/50 between 10 and 11, and once 11 has the lion's share they won't have any need to keep supporting 10....
