Password managers & incorrect passwords (app vs desktop).

Why is it that you can use a password manager to create a password, it works perfectly fine in the first thing you use it in (be it app or desktop) but then when you go to use it in the other (so desktop if you first used it in the mobile app) it says incorrect password, even when you copy & paste & even when you copy & paste but delete the last character & enter it manually & then even when you go through the faff of manually inputting all 15 characters?
Instagram has been one for me. There's another I've come across recently which I forget.
It's annoying to have to keep resetting your password on one to use it via that way & then when you want to use it on the other you have to reset password again.
And yes, I'm saving the new password to the password manager.

I've found that mobile apps are 'seen' as different from web-site URL's so password managers can create multiple entries. For example the Hilton Hotel app is com.hilton.android.hhonors and the browser address is www.hilton.com so you sometimes need to manually manage the vault entries.0

Bitwarden (and I'm sure other PWMs) on mobile devices has a local copy of the password database that needs to be "synced" with the master copy. This happens automatically when the app is opened or periodically, but can be done manually where a password has been changed. Can mean that an incorrect password is supplied to a login attempt if a login is attempted on a different device soon after a password change on another.
Other than this I've not come across a situation where the same site has needed different passwords depending on the access method. As @Vitor says, the password vault entry for an entity can have more than one address to allow lookup when auto-completing passwords on an app interface or a web page.0 -
Maybe a bit more clarification (unless I'm just not understanding you guys?) ...
- Yep it's Bitwarden I'm referring to
- I'm not talking about logging in on one & then immediately within seconds trying to log in on the other. I'm talking about hours or days gap.
- What I'm specifically referring to is (take the Instagram one for example...) opening the app, need to do a password reset so do that (using Bitwarden - and SAVE password to Bitwarden so that BW is correct with new password), copy the new password in to the APP on my phone & job done, it works.....................then at a later date on the PC go to instagram via a browser, copy the password over from Bitwarden on the PC & it tells me incorrect password. I go to show password on both Bitwarden PC and Bitwarden mobile app and it is an exact match. To be further clear - there is no space at the end of the final character which I know can trip people up at times.0 -
Well I don't think the "bug" is anything to do with Bitwarden. I've had similar issues but that has been caused by my having more than one account with an entity and them having similar user ids, specifically Google accounts that might differ by a single character, and several ids for TV streamers to take advantage of free trials.
Instagram might be the issue, it does fight quite hard to get you to "integrate" your Meta accounts (IG, Threads, Facebook, WhatsApp...) into one, integrated Zuckerberg Universe. Quite how it does this I have no interest in finding out but I bet it involves passwords...
EDIT : No chance is there that you have 2 Bitwarden accounts?
EDIT2 : Have you got Chrome Password Manager/Autofill (or equivalent for your browser of choice) turned off?0 -
The few times I've had an issue similar to this it's been one of two things happening:
1) Multiple entries in my vault for the same website. I've updated one entry but use the password from the other entry to try and login (which fails). As mentioned above, sometimes when you access sites the urls can be slightly different and BW treats these as separate entries in your vault when you update account login details.
2) I've set a password longer than the allowed password length for the website. Most of the time you will get an error from the website concerned, but I've had many sites allow me to set long passwords which then don't work (eg. 99 or 128 characters). It's only when I change them again to be within their length limit (64, 32, sometimes even as long as 20 characters) that I'm able to login without issues.0 -

Edit 2 - Firefox is my main but I have Chrome installed & use it for certain things. Autofill is turned on but before anyone suggests it's autofilling the old password ... it may be, but that's irrelevant because I'm copying & pasting the new password from Bitwarden before I even hit enter.PRAISETHESUN said:The few times I've had an issue similar to this it's been one of two things happening:
