DLA to PIP

My son has just had his 16th birthday. He has been receiving mid care low mob DLA since he was 5.
Because of the nature of his disability and because of the difference in assessment criteria with PIP and DLA, and perhaps because I diidn’t push hard enough with DLA I am very confident his PIP award will be higher. Probably enhanced care enhanced mob.
So I’m a bit annoyed to find out that he just gets DLA to the PIP award and then the PIP from the date of decision. No backdating of the difference to his 16th birthday.
If we can find the money elsewhere while his PIP is being assessed wouldn’t it be ultimately more advantageous for him if I stopped the DLA and make a new claim for PIP? Presumably then the PIP would be backdated to date of claim.

Frankly I think it is fairly rubbish to treat people like the insurance companies do and make things more beneficial for new claimants but DWP have a monopoly so what can you do?
I am currently receiving Universal Credit and Carers Allowance. Am I right in thinking the carers would stop but then be backdated with the PIP.
I am a very recent claimant of UC and have no idea how that would be affected or even how it works really so some help with that would be appreciated.

PIP is usually backated to the point of application.
As you have noted the assessment for PIP and DLA are totally different and so alot of those who have DLA dont always convert to PIP.
The way things work is until the change of provision the original payment is continued. Think of it another way, if he fails the PIP criteria then youll be paid DLA up to the point of the PIP decision.Proud to have dealt with our debtsStarting debt 2005 £65.7K.
