Amazon Prime Day rip off

Hi all
I am at a loss. I ordered a couple of things from Amazon prime day in good faith. They didn't turn up, but something completely random turned up in their place! I tried to resolve this with Amazon customer service, but it got complicated because it's hard for them to accept a return for an item they don't know you have! 4 customer service agents hung up on me because they didn't know how to move forward.
They offered me a refund but I now can't re-buy the items at the price I paid. So it seems that Amazon can sell as many as they want, more than they have, and then not fulfil them and give you a refund. I tried emailing Andy Jassy to complain but I have had no response. They have now automated the refund so I have no legal recourse that way.
Surely this can't be legal? I have nowhere else I can move to now though as customer service won't talk to me and even trying to escalate hasn't worked
Does anyone have any guidance to offer please?
Thanks so much for your thoughts!

Mistakes happen. You don't know if the product was shipped and then swapped in transit for example.
They have to refund you, they are, you could sue for loss of bargain, but for a few things its not likely to be worth your time/effort/money.
There's nothing illegal in what they have done.
Additionally Amazon have the right to refuse to let you use their services, so be careful how much of a fuss you make. They legally can block you should you be more trouble than your worth.2 -

It is, AFAIK, Amazon's normal policy to refund rather than replace in most (all) circumstances. The customer is free to then rebuy (or not) at whatever the price may be.

Always worth checking on something like CamelCamelCamel, Prime Day "deals" arent always their best prices if it's not something you need urgently.5

Its not the best scam
sell you an item they dont have then refund you
its just a mistake2 -
Why would it be illegal? They've simply made a mistake.1
