Advice/opinion on plastering job

Options
I had my roof redone about a month ago.

While the work was being done the roofers damage my ceiling putting a hole in it and splitting the plasterboard. While screwing in the new roof they also damaged smaller parts of the ceiling elsewhere - see photos.

They sent a plasterer yesterday who only cut out a bigger hole in the ceiling and in my opinion, didn't fit the new plasterboard well - photos attached, then skimmed over.

I told him and the roofing company I wanted brand new plasterboard fitting which they clearly weren't willing to do. I didn't like the plasterers attitude either.

What are your thoughts please? What would you want if it was your ceiling?

I haven't paid them yet and only had my kitchen plastered last year.

Thank you.

Looks like a pretty standard patch job on a ceiling to me...nothing there indicates substandard patch work (we don't have a photo of the finished skimming to refer to at this point).

Thank you for your responses. This is the finished plaster work.

  • Very hard to tell from that photo OP, it looks like the ceiling has a step in it and they've patched the hole with some new board and then skimmed the whole section up to the step which AFAIK is acceptable.

Question is how smooth is the finish, decent plasterer will get an almost glass finish but decent plasterers are hard to find...

You won't really know how good it is until you paint it as that will highlight any imperfections, this paint is recommended for ceilings:

as it reflects very little light masking imperfections.

Along the lines of consumer rights, they've caused some damage, have repaired it, I don't see patching the hole like that is a problem, it would be a common fix, only question is the quality of the finish IMO. :)

That looks ok to me, but it's never easy to tell from a poorly-lit photo.  It's also not fair to properly judge the job until it's painted.  Unless there are obvious "seams" still visible that I can't see in the photo.

I think you're being unreasonable. When painted that'll likely be fine - they don't have to redo the entire plasterboard ceiling because they damaged it; they simply need to make good to a reasonable standard.

I've spoken to my roofer and he said there's no reason to be in the loft.
Is that fir your roof or a roof and job he has never seen?

He's seen my roof when he was pricing up. I took it to mean I don't think he needs to get into anyone's loft.

But we don't know the precise circumstances of OP's situation.  There may not even be a loft.  If it's a ground floor kitchen, it could very well be a flat-roofed extension.
