Scottish power closed account.

Hi.

on the 4th of July ‘25 I signed into the Scottish power app to make sure my monthly payments (electricity) were meeting usage, and that I still had a bit of an ‘in credit’ balance to cover the winter.

‘Account closed. Your refund is being processed.’

Yes, they closed my account, just like that. No contact, no warning.

so, I now do not have an account with any electricity provider. I am getting electrical power though.

I contacted them and they told me my account had been closed in March.

Just as an FYI, I was over £500 in credit, and had not missed a payment since I joined them, probably over 15 years ago. I have not moved home, and am the sole resident of a property owned (no mortgage) by me.

The new account holder is apparently paying the bill, but they want me to confirm the current account holders details, which I can’t.

Being no financial idiot, I opened a new savings account online with my bank, put the refund in it, and set up a standing order of the amount I was paying, to put that to one side each month, so if/when I finally get asked to pay for the electric I am using I will have the money readily to hand.

but how do I get the account back into my name? Attempts to switch fail, probably because the current account holder keeps saying ‘no I did not ask to change suppler.’

What happens if I just carry on putting money aside each month to cover it, and wait for scottimg  power and the unknown other to finally work it out? Would I only be liable for 12 months, as I have told them?

You should be able to sign up with a new supplier and it'll get switched back to you. Meanwhile whoever is paying your bill thinks they're paying their own, but should work this out after you claim the supply back.

Anyone moved in anywhere nearby around that time?

Water and council tax still in your name?

See if you can find who now thinks they are supplying your electricity.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Update, they seem to have realised that they made a mistake.

In almost every email I reiterated, ‘perhaps you could/should contact the person paying my bill, ask them for their address?’

Got a message today. Words to the effect ‘we have closed the account opened in error, and are sending you your new account details.’
So I guess they contacted the random 3rd party, who said that that live at (made up) 68 lower road, and not 6b upper road.
