Car Insurance after an at fault accident

Options
Just wondering if anyone knowledgeable may know.

I was in an at fault accident, I ran into the back of a car.

Reported the incident and have accepted fault.

I've decided to claim on my insurance for repairs to my car. Initially I thought it was just paint scratches and a new hub cap but it's also dented as I swerved into a barrier after.

If I did it outside insurance would cost around 1k for the basics ie. Hitting out the dents and painting and a new numberplate. I would also like to get the wheel alignment done as it's ever so slightly off. And replace the hub cap.

Initially my insurer said it could be a write off. But then came back and said it's repairable.

No one was injured and they were able to drive off after.

The other car...it had three scratches but that seemed like all. However having seen how much more damage I actually did to my car than I first thought, who knows... It's a new electric car 40k, less than 3 years old. My insurer is offering repair services to the third party.

I believe they also have to contact the council as I hit the safety barrier. They are providing a hire car.

My car is 2nd hand 2014 Hyundai and cost 7k in 2022, has only 17.5k miles on the clock.

When I look online, it mentions that insurance could double but I am just finding it hard to believe that my insurance would not possibly triple?

I am mid 40s, 3 years driving, no claims or accidents. I did pass in 1999 but didn't drive for decades. Renewed my  license in 2022.

I wondered if anyone has had any similar situation recently or might know what to expect when I go to renew my insurance in September.

The truth is nobody knows.  Your current insurer may try and rinse you, but car insurance is so competitive a claim may not result in a huge increase in premium.  This has certainly happened to me.

It's  all down to market conditions and if companies need to generate income from new customers they will offer attractive prices.

After our car was written off through an at fault claim our renewal premium was less than we had paid the year before.

My wife's car was hit by a van veering into her lane on a roundabout. She didn't stop as she thought the guy was threatening/high on weed and she had our autistic son with her. She explained everything to her insurer and notified the police as she hadn't stopped. We decided to pay for our repairs, which cost £350.

This was in 2021 and it's made no difference to her premium whatsoever, even when she changed insurers. She still declares the accident on renewal just in case.

If you passed your test in 1999 then you have 26 years not 3, even if you were choosing not to drive for most of it.

How much a claim impacts you depends very much on a number of factors, it can be very significant if you were already a bad risk for some reason or it can be very minor if you are otherwise a good risk. The cost of the claim rarely has any notable impact.

When my car was involved in a hit and run, so fault from most insurer's perspective, premiums went up about 20% and I didnt have the NCD protected

Unfortunately you don't really have much choice other than to suck it up and see. Just leave it all for your insurance company to sort out and deal with the renewal price and quotes when it becomes due.
