Fridge Running Continuously

Options
Hi
Having a problem with our fridge. It's a simple, larder type fridge with no freezer compartment. There are no fancy control boards or anything, just a simple, variable thermostat that should turn the compressor on and off to control the temperature.
The problem is that the fridge compressor is running continuously, irrespective of the dial setting. I've removed and tested the thermostat by checking that it clicks off when the probe is inside our freezer. It seemed OK but I fitted a new one to be sure. But the problem persists. I'm completely puzzled. I don't see how a properly functioning thermostat doesn't solve the problem...
Anyone have any ideas?

Is the fridge maintaining the right temperature or is it too cold or too warm?  What is the temperature of the room it is in?  Is it located in direct sunlight?
  • It's too cold. It runs continuously regardless of the temperature of the room - behaviour preceded the current heatwave!
