Is there a right way to find a legitimate no win no fee solicitor?
The reason why I ask is because I tried one firm a while ago, called them up, gave them all my details, confirmed that I would not be charged. All seemed well, but a mere 2 weeks into the case they had billed me for nearly £2000 in costs!
This was before they had done anything other than to gather information. I managed to get out of it but not without a fight.
This has put me off the whole no win no fee idea but I am in need of such a service now. How do I find a good NWNF law firm that will actually NOT charge me? Any advice would be appreciated.

What value is the potential claim?
Firstly, there are multiple types of conditional funding agreements so they can work in different ways. Almost all will assume that you see the case to the end and all will charge you if you decide to abandon the case part the way through.
Secondly, no win no fee means there is a fee if you win! Some seem to think everything is always free. Depending on the track of the court some of their fee may be covered by the third party. Similarly depending on the type of arrangement their fee may be capped at a percentage less whatever they received from the defendant.
Finally, the "fee" is in relation to their time, disbursements may or may not be payable like wise ATE insurance but in some cases the ATE Insurance covers these for you.1 -
Note that all of these firms, be they good, bad or indifferent, will only take on a case they feel they will have a good chance of winning.0

In particular, you will very likely be liable for costs if you want to withdraw from the case for any reason before its conclusion.0
