Private plate V750 wrong to person.

Hi, I bought a car from a private seller last week, 150 miles away from home. I drove the car home, and after 30 min's or so, my wife (she thought she was helping) took private plate off our old car (up for sale soon with original plates), and assigned to our new one.

About another hour later, I get a message from seller, saying they can't transfer V5 to me, they keep getting locked out by DVLA site.

So, what's happened is, that we transferred plate onto new car too soon, while seller's name was still on V5, so when Mrs transferred plate to it, it generated a new V5 with a fresh document number - which none of us know until the new one turns up @ seller's house.

They can transfer V5 to us when it arrives (within 10 working days according to DVLA)

The trouble is, the V750 retention certificate will now get sent to seller's house. I have a copy with the certificate number as my email address was used, and it has my postcode attached to it, although the name and address for correspondence is the seller's.

I realise seller could now use the V750 for his own purpose, but I'm happy he won't as it's personal to us and doesn't mean anything to anyone else.

If I ask him to send that new V750 to me in post, as it's now assigned to my car will I need to pay another £80 to update the holder, or is the fee only required when assigning a new car? We intend keeping this car for a while, and we will only need the certificate number if/when we transfer in years to come, and as we have that relevant certificate number, do we we rally need to do a transfer?

Thank you.

Good luck getting plates made without the correct documents.

If the private plate has been successfully assigned to the vehicle you have purchased then surely the there will not be a retention certificate at all.

    What a mess!

Or you can get ‘show plates’ off eBay without any documents. Won’t have the makers name on, but ok as a stopgap until the documents arrive.

Last time I ordered plates off eBay, by the time I was ready to post the documentation the plates had arrived!

If there is no retention certificate that will be great. We have the certificate number which is all we really need going forward.

I've had a think about this, regarding comments here.

So am I right in thinking, now the plate is assigned to a car, there will not be a V750, as these are only to retain a number while not assigned to a vehicle?

From my understanding of what you have done no plate is now on retention.

The previous owner is still the registered keeper of your new vehicle with your private registration on it and if you get any speeding or parking fines etc they will be notified of them as the RK until such time they transfer that status to you.

As for insurance, who knows what you have told your insurers, the car which you are selling now has to be insured under it's original allocated registration, which you should've been advised of electronically when you removed the private plate.

For the car you have purchased, searching by the private registration for insurance will likely bring up the car you are selling as make/model as the database takes a while to update and if you call to do it over the phone you'll have to declare that you are the owner but not yet the registered keeper as that cannot be changed by the seller until they get the new V5C.

That's my reading of it, please correct me if I am wrong, as I said before, it's a mess.

First of all, thank you for your comments.

But you needn't be so concerned.

The original car is still being used for another few weeks until it's insurance expires after 12 months, insurers have updated reg number.

The new car is off the road till then, at the local garage being serviced along with new cambelt and water pump being fitted, by which time it should hopefully all be sorted.

You're right, it is a mess, but not a drama. I doubt this is the first time this has happened 😊

To continue, the new car, with fresh number was on database within minutes.

We took out insurance for new car the same day we bought the car, to start the day after our original car insurance expires.
