I had a smart meter installed on 1st May - prior to this i submitted monthly readings on the same day each month - received a bill 2/3 days later with the amount being taken about 10 days later on same date more or less - this worked perfectly up until the sm meter was installed - I had to have one as my old was one of the RTS ones.     Since then I have not received a bill and no DD has been taken from my account despite numerous requests to energy supplier.    I do not know how to read sm meter as engineer told me that i did not need to know as it was smart!  hmmmmmmmmm.     i obviously do not want to build up a large bill but dont know what else to do now.

    Which supplier ?
Are there any readings showing in your on line account ?
Reading a smart is not really much different to reading a non smart meter plus you can also usually get the meter reading off the IHD.
What model of meter/s and IHD do you have ?

All functioning smart meters can be read manually.

Check your providers website for your particular model.  They differ.

    Here are a few examples

And on current meter check the meter WAN light to see if flashing every 5 sec, which means it thinks communications healthy, and if so, contact your supplier to see if they have managed to connect to it and taking your readings.

If not, contact them to see if they can fix.

Andin interim take and submit readings monthly as normal.

Unfortunately, most IHDs only show the combined total for all rate registers. So a direct reading from the smart meter for both rates will be necessary if they are on economy 7.

Re your last point - hopefully save aside roughly what you were paying last year as a guide.

You might even make a couple of % in interest.

You could also pay it in advance if holding in own accounts problematic (e.g. if on means tested benefits, close to savings thresholds).

As above check wan led light on comms hub and talk to your supplier about no bills.
By all means read and submit manually until they resolve

It can take weeks for some suppliers to connect succesfully and setup for new smart meters but 2.5 months is definitely pushing it.

However in some areas smart meters dont actually connect properly, seems if anything more problematic in north on arqiva lrr than south on cellular comms hubs anecdotally at least.

Thanks for your comments.  I was orig on econ 7 with night and day usage but it now only seems to read one reading for everything and the gas meter which is under the stairs i cannot even read as you have to lay on floor to read it and press buttons.   Currently have a dodgy knee and cannot get down.

Which model of IHD - the little box on the worktop - do you have ?
IHD3 should definitely read the gas meter and single rate electric - do you now have a single rate electric meter ?

As molerat says above, you can probably get your meter readings from your IHD.
If you have gas for heating, it's likely that single rate electricity will be the cheaper option.
When you were on E7, how many kWh per year were on the peak daytime rate, and how many on the off-peak night rate?
