    .....and just to clarify....

There is nothing wrong with designing and installing a supply capacity of 20A ( or any other suitable figure) in it's entirety. What is not acceptable is just uprating the mcb without ensuring it is the correct value.

That is why the initial installation and any changes  need to be done by a competent person to ensure correct operation, compliance with regs, safety and compliance with insurance cover. For England and Wales ( other jurisdictions differ) that means it is not a DIY job, however easy one might think the job is.

I have more or less given up with getting a local electrician (qualified for this) and have today been speaking to sustainable energy in Washington. Replace breakers or whole new inverter

Two / three heads are better than one. The options seem to be to pay sysenergy to check out the breakers, either the internal functions thereof or if there is some external source responsible, rodents, water or whatever.   And/or replace with the replacement breakers that I have purchased. Or go straight for a new inverter [Aurora?] which no doubt they would be happy to install for me.

Anti climax I'm afraid. The man from Sustainable Energy came today. After hearing my tale of woes he diagnosed a "loose connection" which he was able to fix with a screwdriver without changing either of the two breakers. Downsides: Call-out charge. Cost of replacement breakers. Lost days of solar feed. Upside: a useful contact to have for when the time comes to replace the inverter. Some you wins, some you don't.

Surprisingly he recommended replacing with 20 amp breakers even though the system is set up for 16 amps. You pays your money and ..
