Yes, you need to open an account with the incumbent supplier first.
Then you can switch.
Hopefully you have the opening meter readings from the day you took possession of the property, you will be charged from that day and on those readings until you submit your final readings with them.2 -
Don't rely on meter readings taken by the agent or former occupier, always take the readings yourself. Don't forget the water meter, if fitted.0

Move in, take readings, sort contract with existing supplier (which should be on the TA6 form provided by your solicitor), they should put you on a deemed contract, then start the switch to your preferred supplier. You can't do that until you are the owner of the property which is usually on completion.0
