Are the light fixtures very old?  We had problems with flickering lights and would have to dim/undim frequently.  Also had a couple of bulbs pop when we "flicked the switch".

It turned out that the switches for the light fixtures were not compatible with the new energy saving bulbs that are now available.  Got someone in who did some magic (replaced the transformers??) and, hey presto, no more flickering, erratic dimming or popping.  Took him under 5 minutes per switch - obviously knew precisely what the problem was whereas I was thinking the whole house was going to need to be rewired.

My energy saving bulbs that are dimmable flicker when they are near end of life & it can go on for months.  Once that bulb is replaced then there is no problem.  The dimmer switch is over 30 years old, so pre the new bulbs.  I am looking forward to getting rid of the switch as it is over 15 years since it was dimmed other than I wonder what will happen if.

Is it a 13A plug-type socket, and does it have built in USB sockets?

Try trailing edge dimmer switches with attention to maximum load.

    This fixed my flickering lights.
