Are you claiming JSA? If so, you should receive your tax back through this payment.
If not, are you intending to work again before April?Gone ... or have I?0 -
im not claiming anything at the moment, i hope to be working before april, but i may not have found employment in the next 6 weeks, if thats the case i was led to belive i could claim a lump sum of tax back from the last financial year? thanks for your help0

No, if you are planning to work again in this financial year your next employment will reflect any overpayment.
Also, if you are not planning to be out of work for long, don't get your hopes up for a large amount back xGone ... or have I?0 -
ok that clears things up abit thanks, but one last question, should i be getting in touch with the inland revenue or the job center to claim?0

To claim JSA, you need to contact the Jobcentre.
To claim any tax back, you need to contact HMRC (the newer name for the IR). However, I would just wait until you get new employment.
Good luck with your search xGone ... or have I?0 -
I retired last Christmas (2006) but last year worked three months temporarily for previous employer. After employment finished I claimed tax back by filling in tax form which I downloaded from a link on this page
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/ReclaimingTax/DG_10013075
Full details are listed where tax can be claimed back. Hope it helps, good luck0 -
If you have been taxed on PAYE, it's highly likely you've not overpaid any tax. PAYE deducts the right amount of tax as you go along.
It really depends on how much you earned and whether or not you work again, before April. But - as dmg24 says .... "don't get your hopes up". You are either owed "nothing" or "a tiny amount".Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
The only way that you will be due any tax back (presuming you are PAYE & on the corect tax code) is if you dont earn any further money this tax year and possibly if you claim JSA.
However, this will not be refunded until the end of the tax year and you will have to write to HMRC.
JSA dont refund any tax overpayments.
If you are only out of work for a short period of time then you may see a little return or lower tax payments at a new employment.

Your claim would be on the current tax year not last year. The amount would depend on what rate of tax you have been paying, if we assume that you were paying tax at 22% then for each week that you had no taxable income you would be entitled to something in the region of £27 tax rebate. If you were only paying 10% tax it would be less and if you were paying 40% it would be higher. This is a rough figure and may vary depending on individual circumstances. I am sure that JSA would be worth more than this so would recomend going for this if you can.
If you do decide to apply for a tax rebate use form P50 at
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pdfs/p50.pdf
and you can apply after four weeks.
Quote from P50
"Fill in and return this form together with
your P45 (parts 2 and 3) only ifyou are unemployed and not claiming Jobseeker’s
allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefit and you
expect to be unemployed for 4 weeks or more, ......"0
