Davies Group - Bill Protector Policy - total con

We met the requirements for the Bill Protector policy including working for 16 or more hours a week but Davies Group are refusing to pay out and frustratingly every time we communicate they ask for something different. My husband went through treatment for cancer, and the expectation was that the policy would cover the few hundred pounds for our Utility Warehouse bills for the period of his treatment as advertised when we took out the policy. We have been loyal customers and paid without fail every month for years; in return Davies Group have prevaricated and given excuses as to why no payment has been made even after we made special arrangements to obtain from my husband's consultant the unfit for work certificate requested, which we did not need, as my husband is self-employed. They do not understand how self employment works and that as a sole employee of your own company you do not have to fill in a time sheet!  Also at no point did they even acknowledge or offer concern for my husband's health. 

We are frankly disappointed and shocked by the poor service and the misrepresentation of the bill protector product which falls far below what I would expect of a professional company.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

    These are conflicting statements which could be at least part of the problem. Being "self employed" means you are a sole trader. If you are an employee of a company then you are not self employed, at least in relation to the work you are doing for the company. Legally a company is a legal entity in its own right and is your employer even if you are a director of it and the sole shareholder. 

    What doesnt help is that some financial services companies treat the people who are directors of companies whilst also being a person with significant control of the company in the same way as self employed. UWI go even further though and include where a close relative is a person with significant control. 

    Davies in this context is just the outsourced claims handlers, UWI in Gibraltar is the actual insurer. Ultimately follow the complaints process as defined in your policy documentation.

    I concur with DDG's comments above.  If you are the shareholding director of a limited company, then you are not self-employed.
