I am also perplexed by the comments about the courier being liable irrespective of the insurance being taken or not.

I just had a quick skim through the first page and that thread seems to be related to the case where the courier lost the parcel.
Lost entirely.
Just lost a parcel has to be down to the courier.
That differs from this case, where the parcel was delivered but, apparently empty.
An empty parcel arriving might be down to the courier, but could also be:
- empty parcel sent
- poorly packed parcel sent allowing the contents to escape but the actual parcel to still be delivered
- parcel delivered and contents interfered with post delivery.
Those scenarios would not be down to the couriers failure.
I think it is why the OP has been asked whether there is a delivery photo to give any clue as to the extent of damage to the parcel by the time of delivery.0 -

Business sellers have the option to choose custom postage through packlink but that option is rare for private sellers.
Going forward if op has a receipt for posting and has updated tracking info I can't see ebay reversing the transaction. If op is not registered as a sole trader with hmrc I doubt consumer protection applies. Although ebay does offer buyer protection so anything is possible....0 -

As you note, what may differ between the 3 examples is proving such, although a poorly packaged parcel could go missing because it was poorly packaged so ultimately it's all the same conundrum of who is to be believed regardless. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0
